They're all marks that he'd like desperately to ignore, but that his pessimistic nature won't allow him to.

Sen, too - hearing her wake up and seeing her struggle like that... She's still asking for him even at a time like this? The grossly selfish, sick part of himself feels a horrible twist of satisfaction at that. If Sen still cares this much, he matters. One bodyguard's desire to leave him behind can't possibly trump the approval of someone who promised to be his friend.
But that part is still small, even if it's growing, and it's a voice largely drowned out by bigger concerns. For example, the guard that's close enough to touch him.

It's with that in mind that he suddenly stops mid-dash and pivots on his heel, swinging his opposite leg around in a fearsome kick that packs enough strength to send the guard it connects with flying into a couple of his companions. They all go tumbling to the ground, and naturally this has the majority of their attention on him, though a small subset still focuses on Sen and Kimigiku with cries of don't let them escape! Kaoru cries out, too, forceful and hoping he doesn't sound as terrified as he feels.]
