[Rather than viewing it as a burden to bear, even though it is, Kaoru seems discomforted by the fact that she's trying to give him an out. He can't see it in the same light that she does, really; figures that it's probably a combination of her being reluctant to give up her hope, and of him being too useless for her to trust in such a dire situation.
He can't blame her for that, really. He's done nothing but commit blunder after blunder since she's arrived here, and this one's finally ended in her slow and excruciating demise. It still stings, though - that he wants to be able to offer just one thing to her in the sea of everything he's done wrong, and he can't even provide that. His eyes stay fixed on her palm well after the wound has sealed itself shut, and his hands twist anxiously in his lap, over and over and over.]
...What can I do, then? If not that...
[There has to be something. Just sitting here watching her die makes him feel so helpless in the face of everything, and he can only imagine that she feels the same.]
